Revetments are used to support the ground, either to support the edge of a path and retain the level surface, or to prevent the adjacent slope falling onto the path.

Revetments can be built out of stone, timber, gabian baskets or even living material such as willow.

The BTCV Footpath manual has examples of designs and techniques for building revetments.
