Mapping and copyright issues are closely prescribed by the Ordnance Survey. Organisations purchase mapping products from the Ordnance Survey under service level agreements. Local authorities will do this under a Mapping Service Agreement (MSA).

Each local authority has an Ordnance Survey Liaison Officer, who is responsible for exchange of information with Ordnance Survey. This can be a large task and is probably only a small part of a job. Mapping users within the authority are advised to contact the Ordnance Survey MSA helpdesk for advice on mapping products, copyright issues and any other questions. The Helpdesk number is available from the Liaison Officer.

Much information is available on the Ordnance Survey website though a password is required for entry to specific areas of the site as a licensed business user. If you have an MSA, this may be available through its administrator or the OS Liaison Officer.

Guidance

A helpful ready reference for many officers will be guidance on access to public rights of way information in England and Wales produced by The Improvement and Development Agency (IDEA) which includes reference to Ordnances Survey copyright, charges and obligations.
