Northamptonshire's Main Themes - Summary from the Assessment
Access Patterns
- Horse riders tend to use the same routes because of a lack of alternatives
- People like to plan new routes- these need to be promoted & well maintained
Information
- Routes are badly signposted
- Not enough waymarking
- There is not enough information available
- On signposts
- Not enough publicity & promotion about rights of way and access
Accessibility
- Support for removal of stiles
- Replace with gaps or gates
- Some routes are difficult to use by those with mobility problems
- Surfaces need improving on certain routes
- Popular routes
- Byways & bridleways
- Accessibility very important around towns & villages
- A joined-up network
- Too many routes severed by roads and other unsuitable crossings
- Not enough routes for horse riders and drivers
Destination Interest
- There are not enough routes linking people
- The routes are not at the right standard for linking people conveniently
We Can Do Better
- Obstructions are being found
- The network should be better than it is.
Further work will be necessary to identify whether these issues are concentrated in a particular part of the county or if they can be applied across the board.
Proposed Actions
Based on the findings of the needs assessment and our own analysis of the access network, we have put forward a number of action headings forming the basis of how we see the Rights of Way Improvement Plan being implemented. These are the headline actions to be dealt with in the lifetime of this plan. Some are quite ambitious and may take a very long time while others can be achieved fairly quickly. In the detailed actions that follow this summary there are timescales and costings attached to each action to show what will be involved in delivering this plan.
Summary of Proposed Actions
- Create a safe joined-up network
- Create and develop routes open to those with mobility problems and visual impairment
- Create a series of circular routes to improve people's health and enjoyment
- Improve the surface and accessibility of routes linking communities and amenities
- Improve the information available on signposts
- Increase onsite interpretation, promotion and publicity
- Increase the standards of maintenance
- Improve travel choices and use growth to help fund improvements
