The Good Practice Guide

See contents/categories menu or List of All Articles (don't forget to scroll down!) or use the search tool on the left for keywords.

Articles are also divided into categories where appropriate. An article may appear in more than one category. Some articles defy categorisation so see the List of All Articles for the complete contents.

Caution!

The GPG is maintained but content may be out of date or incomplete at any time if circumstances have changed since the last check. The Guide is a collection of articles and examples of practice that was compiled as a reference resource for professional rights of way and access practitioners, primarily in England. Local circumstances vary: not all the material will apply throughout England and since devolution, many circumstances will differ in Wales, which is not necessarily pointed out in the articles. Law for access and rights of way in Scotland is very different and is not covered, likewise Northern Ireland.

The Guide does not attempt to answer every question, nor to be a complete statement of the law or its interpretation. It includes information on legal procedures but ultimately only the Courts may interpret the law.

The Guide is open to anyone but assumes a professional level of knowledge. If your knowledge is limited, be aware that much of the content is open to interpretation and be very cautious in your use of it. The Guide is not a manual, nor is it a substitute for professional advice tailored to specific situations. You should not rely directly upon it.
